Skin Treatments Every Brow Artist Should Understand (Even If We Don’t Offer Them)

In the beauty industry, everything is connected. Skin, brows, muscles, and skincare routines all influence how treatments perform and heal.

At Babyface Brows, we specialize in eyebrows - but many of our clients also receive other aesthetic treatments. Because of this, it’s important for both clients and brow artists to understand how certain skin treatments can affect brow services like waxing, lamination, tinting, and cosmetic tattooing.

Below are some of the most common treatments clients ask us about and why they matter when planning your brow appointment.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment that uses a device involving fine crystal or a diamond tip device. It mixes gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin. There are usually two versions of microdermabrasion, one for estheticians, and a more powerful version for physicians.

Why it matters for brow services: Microdermabrasion temporarily makes the skin thinner and more sensitive. If waxing or other exfoliating brow services are performed too soon afterward, it can increase the risk of skin lifting, irritation, and excess redness.

Typical guideline: Clients should wait at least 7 days after microdermabrasion before waxing or similar brow services.

Botox

Botox is an injectable treatment that temporarily relaxes facial muscles to soften wrinkles. While Botox does not directly affect the skin itself, it changes muscle movement around the brows and forehead, which can impact brow shape and symmetry.

Why this matters for brow artists:

    •    The brow position may shift after injections.

    •    One brow may temporarily sit higher than the other.

    •    The final brow shape may not be visible until the Botox fully settles.

Typical guideline: It’s best to wait about 2 months after Botox before booking a cosmetic brow tattoo so the muscle relaxation has stabilized.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (Restylane, etc.)

Many clients receive facial fillers made from Hyaluronic Acid to restore volume or contour the face. Fillers may be placed in areas like: the temples, under the eyes, the cheeks, the forehead.

Why this matters for brow services: After filler injections, the skin can be swollen, bruised, and/or sensitive to pressure. Some brow services involve stretching the skin or applying pressure, which could be uncomfortable immediately after injections.

Typical guideline: Wait 1–2 weeks after filler injections before brow waxing or cosmetic tattooing.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peel uses acids (such as salicylic acid and/or glycolic acids) to exfoliate the top layers of skin and stimulate cell turnover. These treatments can be particularly helpful for severe or moderate acne, facial blemishes, fine lines and uneven skin pigmentation. Peels can range from very light to quite deep, depending on the formula.

Why it matters for brow services: After a peel, the skin barrier is temporarily compromised. Performing waxing, lamination, or cosmetic tattooing during this time can lead to:

    •    Skin lifting

    •    Hyperpigmentation

    •    Irritation

    •    Poor healing

Typical guideline: Clients should typically wait 10–14 days after a chemical peel before receiving brow services.

Active Skincare Products

Many skincare products also affect the skin’s sensitivity and healing. Common ingredients that impact brow services include retinols, AHAs & BHAs, and/or acne treatments.

These products accelerate skin cell turnover, which can make the skin more delicate. A well-known acne treatment is Isotretinoin, which can significantly affect skin healing.

Why this matters: Clients using strong active ingredients may experience increased sensitivity, higher risk of skin lifting during waxing, and/or slower healing after cosmetic tattooing.

Typical guideline: Clients are often asked to pause certain active ingredients 3–7 days before waxing or lamination, depending on the product.

Why Brow Artists Ask About Skin Treatments

Sometimes clients are surprised when we ask detailed questions about skincare or cosmetic treatments during a consultation. This isn’t just curiosity - it’s about protecting your skin and ensuring the best results.

Understanding recent treatments helps us:

    •    Prevent irritation or skin lifting

    •    Choose the safest brow service

    •    Adjust timing for optimal results

    •    Protect the integrity of your skin barrier

The Bottom Line

Even though we specialize in eyebrows, skin health plays a major role in brow results.

Treatments like microdermabrasion, injectables, chemical peels, and active skincare can all influence whether a client is a good candidate for certain brow services—and when those services should be performed.

When in doubt, always let your brow artist know about recent treatments, injectables, and skincare products so we can guide you safely.

Beautiful brows always start with healthy skin. ✨
